Bass Connections: Mental Health and the Justice System in Durham County
Fall 2025 - Spring 2026
- Direct students in incorporating and cleaning messy, real-world data from the Durham County Detention Facility and Duke Health.
- Lead the team of 3 students in selecting and applying appropriate quantitative methods to rigorously evaluate the effectiveness and overall success of the Detention Facility’s intervention programs in preventing rearrest.
- Coach the team on translating complex statistical findings into clear, non-technical insights that are directly actionable for the Durham County Detention Facility and other community criminal justice partners.
Data+: Exploring Public Opinion and Policy
Summer 2025
- Guided students in applying techniques from statistic to analyze large-scale election and public opinion data.
- Supervised the design and execution of “The Survey Navigator,” ensuring the interactive platform effectively visualizes and allows users to discover and compare complex public opinion trends.
- Directed the team’s research into the impact of varying question wording on survey responses, translating raw data into clear, user-friendly insights for policymakers and journalists.
- Managed the technical workflow, goals, and deliverable schedule by leading meetings with three student researchers over the course of the ten-week program.
